Three Types Of Dental Sedation

There are three distinct types of sedation that are commonly used in dental offices. Which one you and your dentist select are going to depend on the details of your specific case. Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide)
This is among the most common options for dental sedation, though its name is somewhat misleading. The name ‘laughing gas’ describes the relaxing and somewhat euphoric effect it has on those who receive it. It is a common choice for those who are trying to manage their dental phobia during regular procedures and has the benefit of setting in quickly, being easy to adjust, and wearing off in just a few minutes. It’s also safe for children, helping them relax and stop fidgeting during their dental care. When receiving laughing gas, you’ll be able to drive yourself home or even return to work or school after your appointment.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation requires the administration of a pill-based sedative, often Valium or one of its derivatives. These sedatives help you feel relaxed and sleepy and must be taken some time before your appointment. Depending on the medication you receive as part of this sedation, you may be required to not eat for a period of 8 hours before your appointment. This often means that your dental appointment will be in the morning. No matter what time it happens, you will be required to have someone on hand to drive you home after the appointment. One benefit of oral sedation is that, while falling asleep is common, you’ll be able to be easily woken if the dentist needs your cooperation.
IV Sedation
This form of sedation requires the attendance of an anesthesiologist during your procedure and involves rendering you completely unconscious. Receiving IV sedation isn’t covered by all insurances for all procedures, and you may require special dispensation from your provider to have it covered as part of your procedure. Alternatively, you may opt to pay for this procedure out of pocket to avoid being conscious throughout. This form of sedation is most often reserved for complex procedures such as surgical extractions.
